Diploma in Sub-editing
Thank you for your interest in this exciting training scheme that we believe will produce the next generation of sub-editors for The Sun.
For the second year, we have teamed up with The Press Association, through its training division, to devise a comprehensive programme of development.
This will involve:
- Intensive classroom tuition covering basic news-writing and sub-editing
- A period of attachment to various sub-editing desks of The Press Association, learning essential newspaper sub-editing skills
- A period of secondment to a major regional newspaper, incorporating a progressive programme of development and training
- Continuous assessment, copy clinics and completion of a work record
- Mid-course review by Press Association Training
- External verification leading to a diploma in newspaper sub-editing
- The opportunity to be employed permanently on The Sun
Entry criteria
The full-time programme is open to external and internal candidates. It is anticipated that most candidates will be graduates, either in journalism or another subject. They may have completed a post-graduate journalism course or demonstrated a strong interest in journalism, either through extensive work experience or student journalism.
Additionally, candidates will be expected to demonstrate a wide general knowledge, a strong appreciation of The Sun newspaper and the desire to focus on a career as a sub-editor.
It would be an advantage to have a flair for design.
Recruitment
First interviews will take place in March, at The Press Association headquarters in Vauxhall Bridge Road, London, or at PA offices in Howden, East Yorkshire.
Second interviews will take place at The Sun offices in Wapping, London, in April or early May.
Training will begin on July 9, 2007.
Training
This will begin with a four-week course on the principles of news and sub-editing including design, use of colour, headline writing, captions, essential law, government, graphics and use of pictures. This course will take place at The Press Association training centre in Howden, East Yorkshire.
A fifth week of training will take place in Newcastle upon Tyne, where trainees will learn about the principles of news reporting.
Successful candidates will then move on to a period of work placements.
Placements
Trainees will have the opportunity to further develop the skills they have learnt on the course, working in a variety of environments.
Each trainee may have the opportunity to spend:
- Four months on a regional daily newspaper
- Experience on PA subs’ desks
- Time in a satellite office of The Sun
At the end of that nine-month period, trainees will begin work in The Sun head office in Wapping, where they will be employed as trainee sub-editors.
At the end of the training scheme successful candidates may be considered for senior sub-editor vacancies on The Sun.
